This is a strange item I came across - seeking community input (calling Swamperbob): It is approx. 2mm thick and seems to be made of two pieces of aluminum or other light metal sandwiched together. The metal appears to be struck with dies from the 1872CH P/M Peso. What's interesting is how nicely struck the devices are - looks awfully like the real thing and the P/M is clearly visible (see https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=l...02&lot=22745 for comparison): Could this piece have been made with actual dies from the Chihuahua mint or is there some other explanation? If this was made using a cast of an original, wouldn't the result not be so crisp and perfect? Could this have been a test strike at the mint or were the dies subsequently recovered and used for novelty purposes?
Thanks Realeswatcher. As this one was acquired with that genuine CCC you saw, I wondered if this could be a period piece also. I've seen the "presses" he sells, but they are rather crude and bubbly. This piece one is struck so nicely and doesn't show any evidence of casting, so how did it come out so sharp?
