I'm going to take a complete shot in the dark and say VF details corrosion. I mean completely in the dark.

The coin has had an old cleaning and some corrosion. I am not sure of the color as It could be black, chocolate brown or grey. The example has an outside shot at a straight grade VF30. When you get it in hand, please post photo that show actual color. Aggressive bidding for a coin that could end up in a details holder.

Color looks wrong.
Probably cleaned and re-toned.

hard to find decent planchets for these classic heads. I see a around the date area an under the curl. LDS dies. weak strike. most likely she was cleaned

this is just an observation - looking at the profile I hope I'm not seeing what appears to be tooling especially around the nose. it may be just shadowing from the light but I wanted to point that out.

I have it ID'ed as an S-288 variety, rarity 2.
I'd call it a late die state; notice how stars 8-13 "reach out" to the rim.
And I tend to agree; environmental damage rather than porous planchet.

I really can't get a feel for the grade on this one. It's a sharp central strike, with quite a bit of peripheral weakness. That plays havoc with the feel for the grade. Not really sure here.

Hard to get a good feel on this one.
Does look cleaned but I am not sure how much or if its the lighting.
The look of corrosion may just of been the planchet .

In my opinion, the coin has nice VF30 details.
The obverses surfaces are slightly rough, but not corroded.
And yes, it does appear like the reverse may have been cleaned at some point.

What seems like a weak peripheral strike, is in fact due, I believe, to "die flow" which causes the peripheral devices to merge into the rim as the die progressively wears down.

Overall a nice coin, barring what could be a slight reverse clean.

the coin would still detail for it even if it was original to the planchet. I have three classic heads all planchet corrosion and all detailed for it

GERMANICVS - just curious. you dont think the area below the curl is corroded?
