Went to the bank today and got a fresh roll of dimes. Found this one in the lot and it caught my eye right away. The bubbles or blisters are on the reverse and obverse right to the rims. Nothing on the reeding. What caused this effect? I think this is the coolest dime I have found...looks like the schooner is in a hail storm. The bubbles or blisters are of varying sizes and heights. Some are a little flatter.

A better closeup. I could not use the image optimizer today for some reason it would not download the edited version to my PC. These pics were edited with an app I found online and the clarity suffers with the edit.

I think that there was a serious problem with the plating process.

Are you sure the bubbles are under the plating? Kind of looks like it might be something on the coin it self, iv never seen a plating issue like this but imagine it would effect the rim and reeding as well.

As it is a multi plated coin, it is possible that some dust was on one of the lower layers causing the bubbles during the electroplating. Similar to zinc dust on some earlier cents.

Would the plating process mean that there are many more of these or does the final plating happen after the coin is struck? I don't think it is a terrible finish. The camera only captures the higher raised bubbles well....the lower bubbles did not catch with the light as well. If you turn the coin you can see a different effect because the bubbles are so shiny. I think it looks cool

Quote: does the final plating happen after the coin is struck The planchets are plated before the coins are struck. It is possible that there are more out there.

Are there any bubbles on the coloured area? I can't see any. If not I wonder why this area is unaffected. Same goes for the rim and reeded edge.
On a side not there appears to be a few green thing on the coin. Below the N and A in Canada as well as a few other spots that look green both obverse and reverse. Is that just the camera?

Yes there are bubbles under the painted area...they just don't capture well as they don't shine like the other bubbles. I think the layers of paint also make them look smaller. there are some though. I did see a coin like this on line but it was an american penny. There is one on ebay for sale as well, but the bubbles on that one look smaller.

If there are bubbles under the paint then it would have to be an error. I couldn't help you with any kind of value estimate though.
