I will be moving soon and will need to get all the coins in my safe deposit box from east coast to west coast. It appears USPS Registered Mail with insurance is the best option. For the sake of this discussion, assume it's 300 coins with a total value of $40,000. What is the best way to satisfy the USPS requirements below? What would be an acceptable newsletter or trade paper and how would I obtain?

"For stamps and coins of philatelic or numismatic value; the fair market value is determined by a recognized stamp or coin dealer or current coin and stamp collectors' newsletters and trade papers. The date of the fair market value determination must be current and prior to the mailing date."

For those that may want to respond with "take them with you and carry," that's not an option.

Thanks for any advice. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been faced with this situation.

Many dealers will provide a written appraisal for a fee. I'm not sure where you're located from so I can't help you with any local recommendations.

It says trade paper, that means greysheet. Get the latest greysheet. Highlight the coins/grade and take photos of the coins. If it was me, I would take them with me. While I've never had anything ever stolen from USPS, me filling out a form saying I have $40k in items may tempt someone.

I recently also transported my collection. I just gave most of it to my mom in a suitcase when she was flying to another part of the country (you indicated that this option is not for you). It always seemed to me that the cheapest and easiest way to take a few particularly valuable coins with you in a backpack, the rest to transport in batches, possibly small. In order to avoid a lot of damage in case of loss, damage.

But I have to clarify, I didn't have many coins, but the durability of the collection was about 2 thousand dollars.

Unless these are all slabbed coins, it will be challenging to show the value using greysheet when you actually try to claim. For raw coins, I expect you would need a written appraisal.
I've moved nine times with my collection, and to my wife's chagrin, I've lugged the valuable stuff in a single (very heavy) carry-on and slipped the less valuable stuff into the mover's boxes when the movers weren't around. However, I'm confident that the value was quite a bit less than $40K.

I have to assume you do not have a car you will be taking with you across the country. Otherwise, that would be my answer as I have done this several times in my life (although not recently).
