Found this 1947 a few days ago whilst I've been going through some coins mom wanted me to look at. Probably hard to see from the pic's but the reverse appears to have what I would call 'tiger stripes' (technical term). I actually have a few others that appear the same but the lines sometimes move from East to West and North to South. At first blush it appears to have been hit with Scotch-Brite or something but after finding a couple of them I'm not sure. On this particular coin the 'stripes' appear to go from a copperish tint to nickel tint to copper etc. Stronger copper toning through the center of Monticello. Would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks.

Looks like an improperly mixed alloy. If this were a Lincoln Cent, I would call it a woodie. But why is it only showing up on the Reverse and not the Obverse too?

As the planchet are not indexed before they are struck, I would think that the orientation of the stripes would be random for different coins.

Your two pics of the rev are dramatically different in lighting. Which is closer to the coin in hand?

@Spence the first reverse pic shown is the closest representation of my coin. Though I thought the second reverse pic might show the orange tint through Monticello better.

I think we mixt the cent alloys with the 5 cent alloy. The Ni melt at 1455 deg C and the Cu is 1085 deg C. the boiling is Ni 2730 deg C and Cu is 2562 deg C. when they do the alloy they bring the metals to the almost reach boiling point. due to the proprieties of the both metals the effect which you say quote: "woody" could not happened. This it is the base metallurgical physic and chemistry.

this coin has those colors due to the age and environment.
