Things went backwards on this one and I ended up paying $265 after ship and fees. Ahh crud I thought after auction. It arrived - I warmed up to it after studying it a few times. Tough little date these 1897 S's I tracked about 7 and all went full price guide or slightly over by 10-15%. $180-20.00 was what I thought I could get it for...wrong.

Boy, that's tough. I'll say G-04 straight.

I can not go higher than G06 and the value is about $200. If the coin graded VG8, it is over graded. The VG8 puts the coin in the price range that you paid. The scratch might get me off the coin at G06.

I like this one listed on ebay better than the OP example, and it is priced at $204 with free shipping.

G6, there's old cleaning but it is now market acceptable

Close to G-04 but I'll say G-06 . With that reverse rim it can go either or .

Solid G06. Obverse hairlines and neck hit detract, sans those, good eye appeal. Yet another that's on the verge of VG sharpness with weak rims.

VG obverse but the reverse will hold this to G-6.

The grade has not been posted. I posted another 1897 S in a PCGS holder that is for sale at $204 vs $265 for the OP example.

It grades G-6 and would / should have bought a 10 ounce bar from SDBullion LOL.
Nice looking G+ though for an 1897 S $50-60 over priceguide ain't so great - live and learn, thanks for opinions.
