I have a 1932 Quarter that has an area where the mint should be. There is a faint shadow of an 'S' and hopefully I have captured it in the photos. Is the 'S' original and there has been an attempt to remove it? or is it an attempt to put an 'S' in that position. Thank you for your time and attention.

I think that this is a Philadelphia minted coin ( no mint mark) and that the coin took a hit where a MM would be if one belonged there. I also would see absolutely no reason to remove an 'S' MM from a '32 quarter - that would just ruin an otherwise valuable coin.

That mark is incuse. On a mintmark it would be raised, not below the surface.

from far away it kind of looked like there was a mint mark but the close up is good and just shows a hit. Looks like the coin may have had some very heavy tarnish and was harshly cleaned.

Toning comes with age. The mark could have been there from right after the strike dropping into the bag. But it is not a missing mintmark as it would be raised some, if it were on the die, or was a grease filled error. Not it is a mint error. Just a normal 1932 quarter.

Have to admit, I see it to. But it's just a stain, too big to be a mint mark.
