I have no idea where to start on this one. The date has what looks to me like a plating bubble on the 8 and to be honest I have no idea if this is supposed to have a mint mark or not, in some light it looks like I can see one and in other light I cannot. Your thought on the what makes this coin look like it does all over are appreciated. Thank you.

that coin has seen some circulation hits (on the date) and a lot of erosion on the rest of the coin, either by acid of some sort or extreme environment.

Based on what looks like a rippling effect on the coin I would guess this is heat damage, acid generally leaves a much smoother more even look as it eats away at the coin evenly.

The way to tell the difference? Weight. Heated, the weight will be normal. Dipped in acid, The weight, will be under weight. (A agree with heat and the weight will be close to normal.

CoopHome: How can you tell the difference between an acid dipped coin and a heat affected coin?

The weight is 3.03 Grams. I tested multiple times.

So it is likely the heat issue. When acid is used, the weight drops of faster.

Even other coins can be reduced with acid:

The difference is the pitting if the acid eating up the coin:
