Hi all,

This is the second piece (along with the Ottoman Gold Sultani posted in the world forum).

This medallion was described as a circa 1543 'Naumburger Germany BishopsStrife Double Headed Pope/Devil & Cardinal/Fool' medallion in silver with a period loop and is 26mm.

As I mentioned in a my other post, this too will be going to a new home but does anyone else have more information on these medallions so that I can describe it correctly.

I was considering getting it certified by NGC but haven't heard back from them yet on if they would be able to or not.

Thank you very much in advance!

@vinnie, thx for posting this. At first look, I was thinking that it was much more recent that mid 16th century due to that super-high relief, but after doing a little research I think you may have this attributed properly. These pieces were cast rather than struck and so the higher relief was enabled.

Here is a description from a Roma auction of a similar example of these satirical medals:

Quote:
German States - Low Countries, Satirical Pro-Catholic Cast Æ Medal. Circa 1550. LETABITVR IVSTVS IN VIRTVTE TVA (let us rejoice in your strength), bust of Pope wearing triple tiara to left, inverting into bust of Emperor, wearing imperial crown / CONSTITVES EOS PRINCIPES SVPER OMNEN TERRAM (You [God] will make them princes over all the land), bust of Bishop wearing mitre, inverting into bust of Cardinal, wearing flat hat. Mitchiner, Jetons, Medalets & Tokens II, 3021. 11.90g, 28mm, 12h.
