Need some feedback from home.

Every 1938 and most 1937 Crowns I am finding in the States or on ebay
looks AUnc.
(no toning)
I have a few in my possession and under magnification, they show signs of circulation, but all of them have a nice finish.

Is this common or have all the Crowns in the Us been cleaned and recirculated?

Richard,

I have the feeling alot of higher grade lower value silver coins that have dirt or heavy toneing on it get a good old clean, I don't think we are ever able to find out uinless they do a bad job of it. They obviously do this to increase the price they get for it.

The beauty about older coins, even in UNC you would expect a bit of tonning (adds beauty the coin).

Anyway I could write for hours on the subject, to allow for other opinions I will stop.

Cheers,
Lars

Hi RG

I have return several ebay purchases of Australian florins and other smaller denom coins for cleaning,, funny thing though some not all but some were only cleaned on the obverse? Invariably the seller said they had not noticed the cleaning,,

Im kinda feeling the same as you, that a great number of these coins found in the US have been cleaned, in one fashion or another,, as for why ,, I cant answer that !!

I know a lot of dealers dip silver. I agree natural toning is better. I do not dip but it is common practice in Australia....tho I do not know of a dealer that admits to it.

I once saw a dealer, who winces at cleaning of any sort, silver dip a few odd florins a customer had purchased, they were all good EFs. When I was served and alone in the shop, I asked the dealer why and the reply was that the customer had requested it. He added that he always advised against it, but would do on request after warning that it could ruin the coin's value.

I 100% agree with you PNC_king....but if you are buying silver you need to be particularly careful.
