I'm trying to get into coin collecting. I found this 1962 D penny today and I noticed that the rim is quite thick in some areas and it cut off the L in liberty. I'm unsure if it's damaged or if it's an error. Can someone please let me know if it's damaged or an error? I really don't know how to determine the difference. I'm attaching pictures so you all can see what it looks like.
Definitely damage - spent tine lounging around a parking lot, getting run over, time and time again. Or another option it was in a dryer banging around for a while. What ever caused the damage, it is still damage and not a mint error.
It is only an error if it happens during the actual minting process, anything that happens after that is damage. By learning how coins are produced at the mint, you would be able to easily see that could not happen at that time. If you are going to get into coin collecting, you are going to have to do some reading and studying to educate yourself.
Yes, post-strike damage. Agree with the parking lot assessment, and may have spent some time in a dyer as well. Beat up for sure. If coins could talk...
Possible damage caused by using coin as a " form" to make metal sleeve/tube. Hammering sleeve would gradually press edge of coin, then coin discarded and ending up on parking lot due to poor shape and thicker edge where the high side finished rolling over by tire impacts. Massive damage! thanks for the image! Now it can serve as an example of coin abuse!
