I saw those too and thought that was awfully expensive for an MS-67 coin that you can (as mentioned above), buy for basically a buck.

I guess some people think that "First Day of Issue" is worth something...

So, I was looking at the Silver Eagles and Sacagaweas last night on hsn. I watch them periodically for other things, but never before re: coins. In your opinion, those were NOT good prices? 1st day of issue is not something to look for? I am interested in buying coins for my boys. Does someone have a good book recommendation for a newbie? Or a trusted site to buy from? It seems as though I've visited more than a dozen and am not sure which on to choose. But all in all, HSN does NOT have fair prices?

In general, it is the rule of thumb to NOT buy coins from ANY television shopping network! These tend to be over-represented and overpriced.

right on coppernickeldaddy! I just wish more novices knew this so they wouldn't get burned starting out.

That's the really sad part - beginners that get burned can be turned off of the hobby forever.
Rest in Peace

NEVER NEVER buy coins on TV. As others have said, way overpriced! Also never buy any slabbed bullion pieces. They are not coins but pieces of metal. Find a local coin shop or even ebay for your purchases. Better yet join a coin club even if it's a little out of your way. A good source of knowledge.

It is a shame that people are over paying for these coins on HSN. Additionally, the sales people need to stop selling them as investments. If people want to overpay for a beautiful coin, fine. But, it is dishonest to refer to them as investments.

A good recommendation is the A guide book of US coins 2009 RedBook. But the values in there are high also.. Look for about 75% of the value in that book.. APMEX is a trusted site plus if you look around there are a lot of people here you can buy from once you get 50 post and 2 weeks in
