Morning all,

Hope you're having a good weekend.

Acquired this little 1863 farthing a couple of weeks ago and just getting round to looking at it properly. These are a bit scarce, so wanted to gauge some opinion of grade please.

Overall, there's quite a bit of wear on this. Reverse is the worst of it, as well as on Victoria's shoulder and the edges are a bit ropey, but there is some definition in her hair.

This is a nice looking XF-40 to my eyes on the American Sheldon grading scale; I am not sure what British grading would say...

Difficult to judge without seeing the coin in hand. The earlier bronze coins tended to have a higher relief Britannia than the later ones and the lines on the shield were less well defined, but the obverse portrait always wore better on the farthing than on the halfpenny and penny. I'd go for NVF / F+ based on what I can see.

Thanks both.

It's difficult sometimes to know what things are graded as sometimes. Looking at some of the pictures on ebay, dealers sites etc, and then looking at the grade they attribute to it, I sometimes think 'really?'.

Give the apparent wear on Britannia, I can't get above VF-30 or so on the Sheldon scale.

Reverse is VF or slightly better, however Victoria looks very nice and I would say she is aEF. You can see all the hairlines and her gown is sharp.

One tiny edge knock and nice original condition, no cleaning or anything

aEF/gVF overall - a very nice and honest piece.

Only slightly more worn than mine.
