So need opinion on 1970 Proof coins, I have always had problems determining DDO and MD. Ironically the Quarter and Penny look to have DDO or MD also.

Jefferson nickle.

Machine doubling. Your looking at the outside edges of the devices. On a Doubled Die, the spread on them are on the centers of the devices, making them look wider.. Machine Doubling and die wear is what you will find on the outside edges of devices. You are seeing where the contour of the device was flattened by the machine. The spread enlarges the devices:

On Machine Doubling the edge is looking like a 90 degree corner on the affected area. Note on the example above the lack of that look. You see the spread lines on the top of devices, not on the edges.

DDO and MD is very hard for a lot of folks to see the difference. One way to look at the thickness of the devices - if they are thinner - then it is MD.

Also the affected edge of the devices are 90 degree angles. The contour of the devices that were there, are no longer there, because the devices were damaged. You can have Machine Doubling on a doubled die, but Machine Doubling never makes a doubled die. The doubled die, is what makes a doubled die coin.
