Introductory Note: I have posted about many different aspects of the history of US commemorative coins here in the US Commemoratives area of CCF, most with "Commems Collection" in their title to enable automatic inclusion on the "Commems Collection" list created by Bobby. In addition, however, I have also posted about the design elements found on many of the coins over in the "Post Your..." galleries area, as well as within posts here under non-coin-specific titles. I've decided to collect these multiple design discussions for each coin of the series in one place for quick access, I present...

Your silver Grant w/Star gem BU example remains one of the most attractive I've ever seen.

Commems, Your Posted Article or Post stated, " In contrast, the net mintage of the silver "with Star" coin is just 4,256 while the net mintage of the "Plain" Grant half dollar variety is 67,405 (100,000 were struck). Thus, the silver "with Star" Grant coin is relatively much scarcer and its marketplace price indicates such. "

I appreciate the Information. Could you explain, IF you could, Exactly why the STAR was added, Nowhere did I locate the information, The Mintage of 4,256 Compared to the Star-Less Option of 67,405.
Also IF 100,000 were struck, 67,404, Plus the 4,256, Equals 71,660, IF none were returned to the Mint, Where are the Balance of 28,340.... Please, Thanks, .....

"IF you could" - is that a challenge?

At the time, the Centenary Commission reported being surprised when it received a batch of the half dollars with the incused star - they had only specifically requested such an addition on half of its authorized gold dollars. The Mint apparently acted on its own (error? misunderstanding?) when it struck the first 5,000 half dollars with the Star. FYI: The single star has no special significance for the coin. For example, Grant was not a one-star General.

~27,650 of the "No Star" variety were returned to the Mint to be melted; ~750 of the "w/ Star" variety were also reported as returned.
