I just acquired an 1884 S from ebay. It is much "cleaner" looking on the obverse but the reverse looks like it has nice original toning. Could this be due to storage or could it have been cleaned on one side only? And, if submitted for grading, would it be designated "Cleaned - Details" even though the reverse looks "normal"? It also looks more worn on the obverse. Could it be that people used to hold in hand and rub the obverse with their thumb a lot, leaving the reverse in better condition?

It might have been kept in a folder or coin board, leaving the reverse to be affected by the material.

Agreed, if this coin spent time in a coin folder such as a Whitman folder where one side is protected by the backing and the other is exposed, this could explain why the obverse is more worn and 'cleaner' looking.

This is one of the reasons that long ago I quit using these folders for anything valuable.

This coin may have had an old cleaning, and started to tone on one side only. The TPGs could denote a cleaning, even if it was the smallest scrub mark with an eraser. Recognizing a cleaning is subjective as well.

This one is getting into the realm of extreme value if this is an AU-50, and it only dramatically increases very quickly not much higher grade than yours as this date/mm becomes a key date in mint state, and are valued at least 10k grand on up...

PCGS coinfacts lists these retail values for the AU grades, and one can see this massive jump in value
AU-50 @$350 53-$450 55-$1075 58-$3300...

Looks like someone dipped it and then had it stored such that one side retoned. Seems market acceptable and AU-50 or so.
