I don't think this a true doubling but I am curious about what it is. I compared it to a bunch of other pennies and did not find anything like it. I can't see any notable damage but it could have happened. Let me know what you think and if you need other photos.
I believe you may be right. Sometimes looking at these coins through a microscope, it is hard to tell if a mark is raised or inverted. I'll go back and try different angles and see what I get, Thanks for the comment.
Ok sorry for the delay. It is damage. Here a couple of photos that show from different angles. Just goes to show how those coin microscopes can mask the true depth of a mark. Lighting has a big affect. Thanks for the response.
