Back to pick everyone's brains. I love this coin, (reassuringly heavy)except for the spot on the back. (out damned spot!)

Tim, your everywhere! I did try alcohol with no result. When you say acetone, I think of fingernail polish remover. Is there a difference?

When I was at the shop looking for fingernail polish remover, I saw right by it was a bottle of pure acetone.

So yeah.... it should be there...

Yes. Acetone is an ingredient in fingernail remover; what else is in there, we don't know. You want pure acetone, from Home Depot or the like. You can just drop the coin in it to soak; acetone won't harm silver under any circumstances.

The acetone itself, though, is an extremely reactive, volatile liquid which will cheerfully burn your house down if you give it the chance. Use it only in a very well-ventilated area - it evaporates very quickly.

I use a jigger glass with a flat glass cover. A full uncovered jigger of acetone will completely evaporate overnight.

It's difficult to asses what that spot is on your coin from a photo. It needs to be examined with an optivisor or eyeloupe or some means of magnification. As mentioned by another here acetone is indeed polish remover and it's cleaning ability is limited.
If you intend to do any serious cleaning I suggest you pick up Weimar Whites book , "Coin Chemistry", it's a very good primer on types of cleaning and what to avoid.
Most "toning" is done either by accident, as having the coin exposed to paper or some others substance containing sulphur compounds or even air sulphides.Toning for me is undesirable as in some cases it does hide imperfections . Toning is really akin to rust on iron .It means some of the mint luster is GONE due to oxidation and it can never be replaced. The more oxidized it becomes the harder it will be to return it to a desireable condition.Bottom line, it's value is seriously degraded

Xf-45. I really like it, seems original and the spot is distracting but really does not look permanent. Does it look gooey or gummy? Maybe a very careful toothpick that you whittle down so it is not too stiff. Soak it for few days in acetone see if that helps dont use fingernail polish remover. If it were me I would probably put it in my empty pocket after trying the above and see what happens. It is already circulated so hanging out in your pocket as long as there is nothing else in their may do that spot some good. Maybe I'm crazy though?

Just thought I'd mention that coin was on Batman the other day! (I rented Dark Knight)...it was used to decide the fate of a few people, live or die depending on heads or tails.
