How about we replace the 8 billion or so pennies stamped out annually with 4 billion 3 cent pieces and another 4 billion 2 cent pieces?

I think the purchasing power of anything less than a dime is almost pointless. I think the we have to go to 1/20 then 1/4 of the dollar in pricing though due to the quarter. You couldn't give change if you went to 1/10.

I still hold the opinion the we should quit minting the cent. This may or may not flush out the billions of cents from change jars and couch cushions. No matter, people will adapt just like we did when the half-cent disappeared and electronic transactions can still be to the nearest cent.
Rest in Peace

I still say that the 2-cent Lincoln would be a viable replacement (but not with a copper-plated zinc abomination, please). But it ain't gonna happen as long as Congress keeps mandating stuff like trying to replace the dollar bill by minting more and more dollar coins that no one uses other than to pull one of each out of circulation to collect.

A goodly number of countries still mint coins that are worth much less than our cent. Are they really circulating and being used? I'm thinking specifically of the Brazilian 1-centavo piece and the Netherlands 10-cent piece, both tiny coins.

There is no need to replace it with anything. Just eliminate it. It is not needed. Frankly we wouldn't suffer that much if we dropped the five cent and dime as well.

And let's chuck that PAPER DOLLAR TOO !......this way some of these over-minted Dollar Coins can start actually circulating !.....

I can't see getting rid of the Dime or Nickel. That would be too much of a shock to the general public. Besides, replacing the penny with a 2 and 3 cent piece would give us the chance to get two new designs without having to keep butchering the Quarter. :-)

I would love to see a circulating Two Cent Piece but not at the expense of the Cent! I'm sort of nostalgic that way.
