So I've been looking through pennies and I found this 1986 penny. I think it's just post mint damage but I thought I'd ask just incase. Part of the letters in "trust" look smudged and same for "states". Any ideas?

The S in states looks really gnarly to me and I have a thought about it, but I'm a novice so I'll hold my judgment until I hear the expert opinion so I can learn something.

@dan, STATES is very often not fully struck up because it is directly opposite the base of Abe's bust, which tends to take all the metal during the striking process. Your cent was likely struck with this word being lightly struck.

Agree with Spence. The weak reverse (STATES of) is not that uncommon with zinc core memorial cents. The obverse may be showing a touch of Grease Filled Die.

Dan, these are CENTS. We don't call them " pennies" we call them CENTS. This CENT, while showing a few weak spots, is nothing special and fairly normal looking overall. Keep searching.

[IA] with Spence on the weak design elements. Also with Frog as the plating bubbles from the zinc is just terrible on this CENT.
