Hi yall. I just got into coin collection after my grandfather gave me his. So the other day I bought my first coin that wasnt just a State Quarter, a 1898 Morgan dollar to finish my collection of coins from US Wars. I got home and started reading some more about coin collecting, and started to get slightly worried that the coin might have been cleaned, conveniently after I bought it. I tried looking at some videos but I dont think I quite have the eye, or confidence, to say if something been cleaned or not. I noticed something weird by the nose, but not sure if that means if it was cleaned or not. Any help with figuring this out, and tips of what to lookout for in the future would be most apricated.
Thanks in advance and please excuse the weird cutting job I did. DrPeper
aboard! We will be glad to help you out! Decent photos (at least to me ), but we might need to see the reverse to best help you. (Like mintmark confirmation, issues with the reverse, clash marks, etc)
The coin in question seems mint state, but with a ton of bagmarks and that combined with high luster could be making it look cleaned. It could be cleaned on account with how a few of the pics show the light making it look so.
Here are the photos of the reverse. First four are the coin rotated 90 degrees each time flat on a table, the last 2 are at an angle. Sorry about not rotating the first set
Your photos are not providing a quality image to to make a firm judgment, but I will provide information that I see. The first photo of the obverse looks like there could be hairlines from a cleaning in the field area in front of Liberty. It appears that the coin is in the AU range. I am not sure if the reverse has or has not been cleaned.
I'm not sure that you can photograph it well enough for us to tell. When you rock the coin from side to side, can you see any cartwheeling? A cleaned coin won't show it. Here's a good video.

I don't think it was cleaned. It has luster, and lots of chatter. AU-58 slider problem free.

Thanks very much yall. While obviously doesn't mean it wasnt cleaned, as the pictures arent the best, makes me feel a lot better. Even seems I even got a bit of a deal on it assuming it is AU-55 or AU-58 not cleaned. Makes me feel better going back to that coin shop.
