Hey Everyone!
I have a 1928 S Standing Liberty quarter and I'm having a hard time figuring out what a normal vs an inverted mint mark looks like. I can't seem to find any resources that clearly display the differences.

Does anyone have insight into what to look for?

Thanks!

Not too familiar with the older classic or colonial coins, but it just look flattened to me from circulation.

Well there were two mintmark styles that year:

But with the circulation flattening it makes it questionable? But it could happen. You might submit the images to John Wexler:
His information is on his sites home page:

Just checked on PCGS and there is a inverted mintmark punch on the FS-501 files:
The first one looks normal to me? (note the small MM on the image above) {Looks like they missed it again?}

Maybe a smoothed old hit on the top serif?

Looking at variety vista San Francisco Mintmark Styles, this one appeared normal.

Thanks Coop, those images are really helpful. To me it looks more likely to be a slightly flattened "Small Mint Mark" version rather than what I would expect an inverted mint mark to look like. I'm honestly amazed at whoever had the eyes and knowledge required to originally recognize the existence of the inverted mint mark variety. Even knowing that it exists and specifically looking for it I still find it a difficult one to diagnose.

Hmm so those new images just changed my mind. Don't the mint marks on the VF-20 and VF-25 image versions look almost identical to the one on the coin I posted? Or are my eyes deceiving me?

It does look close, although there is definitely damage to the mintmark. We may never know for sure, because the damage jumbled all the evidence. Maybe there are other diagnostics other than the mintmark itself?
Suffering from bust half fever.
