Good morning! Can anyone tell me if there is a general rule of thumb to how much of a premium collectors assign to old green holders? Also, is that purely because of the nostalgia or rather because they were graded more harshly at the time?

Thanks!

My opinion is if the coin meets the grade based on 2022 (gradeflation) standards there is no premium. Most coins that would upgrade a point or maybe two have probably already been re-submitted for reconsideration. The exception to this would be coins that recently entered the market from older collections. JMHO of course...

I've seen these quite a bit.

They definitely hold a premium, but not a huge one unless the coin looks better than the grade.

General thinking is that if a coin is still in an OGH is probably won't upgrade.
It's been looked at often enough by the knowledgeable and found wanting.

That says it all. Are there exceptions to that? Of course occasionally a group of coins comes to market that hasn't been seen since they were first graded in the late 1980's but for the most part Kanga nailed it. I know of a dealer that finds and pays big money for coins in older holders, but he buys the coins not just the holders, they have to be original and top of the grade as well as dripping with eye appeal, he charges and gets a huge premium for them. I won't name them, as I don't want to give away any deals I might miss out on from them, sorry
