Might be plated, but I think it's just attractive environmental toning. to the CCF!

Earlier this month, an ebay seller was trying to offer so-called "gold pennys [sic]," but now he no longer has an account. http://goccf.com/t/424513

No poll for this coin is need. Probably you are not yet familiar with open new post and posting here, Welcome!
On my knowledge no cent was struck on gold. They are around some plated and those coins are consider as Post strike damage which eliminate any value of the coin. IMO it is just a spender.

It is probably real. I have one just like that. Took it to a coin dealer and later researched it. Long explanation but it isn't valuable. I kept it because it is cool looking.

pics are too large, like 4 times the size of my display, to evaluate easily, but I'd guess it's plated or a shiney cent

Way too many pics. Plated or polished real penny.

What's the weight of the coin if it's pure gold it will be well over 2.5 grams that a 1997 would weight

Why is this a poll? Either the coin is real or fake; it can't be both.

Quote: Why is this a poll? Either the coin is real or fake; it can't be both. There is no correct answer for the poll. The penny is real, but it's not gold.

Only Canada issued 1 cent pure golg penny for commemoration of the last cent in 2012. Has 1.96gr at 19 mm diameter and same high that the US cent.

The coin - a perfectly normal 1997-D once cent piece - is real. The gold-coloured plating on it is "fake", in the sense that it wasn't put there by the mint.
All "gold pennies" are "fake" in this sense, as the US Mint has never produced a "gold penny", either solid gold or gold-plated. You might find such things for sale on GovMint.com. but despite the official-sounding name, such sites are not official Mint websites, they are private companies, privately doing the plating themselves and on-selling the coins for huge mark-ups to suckers who don't know they're not "real".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

To me it doesn't look plated, I have seen modern Lincoln cents in so many different colours I assume this is just toning. Or tarnish or wear. As the copper plating wears away the zinc starts to show through a little causing a whole new colour. Same thing happens with copper plated Canadian cents, I see them with half the plating gone in close to mint state, you can see a silver circle in the center of the coins a lot of the time as well.

It was to my belief that this coin was plated.

Okay so when I look at the edge, it is more silver looking with gold or whatever is running through it.
