I started coin collecting when I was 10. Rabidly fanatical about it until I went off to college the first time. I've always gone through my change every day and picked out what I wanted to keep. About 25 years ago I started just keeping all my change and rolling it. I've got quite a bit now and it's time to start going through it while I've still got a little time. I know all the silver and wheat ears are out of it.

I'm really out of practice and don't even know or understand the current grading system. I'm not sure of the rarity of any coins in the last 40 years and I'm primarily going to be concentrating on mint errors in that time frame.

Essentially I'll be starting over as a newbie, but with lots to look at.

Glad to be here and looking forward to learning more.

Oh the last Red Book and Blue book I have is from 1975 so I guess I'll need to get the latest unless there are better online options.

As with most other forums. I neither buy nor sell coins. My primary interest has been and will likely remain just finding those things that slip through the fingers of those who don't care. For instance, just yesterday I found a 1979-S Roosevelt dime that had obviously escaped from a proof set. The occasional silver dime or quarter comes back in change. Once several years ago I got a Franklin half dollar. Quite a surprise!

Correction: I was looking at it for another reason with the loop and it is an "S" that almost looks like an "8" so to my "glasses only" enhanced eyes looked like a "D".....

Oh well.... not the first time I didn't see something right...

to the CCF!

Howdy! I'm a native Texan now trapped in Deepest Darkest New Jersey. I collect error and variety coins and have since 1968 or 1969. I'm looking forward to seeing what you collect! Glad you found us!

@john1 I hope you don't mind, but I'm stealing your site list.

I'm still here. I log on every evening and read until my head hurts. Then I go look at coins until my eyes won't see. I am currently putting my collection from 1973 back together from rolls in addition to my part of my dad's collection which is also rolled. It is amazing that coins that were fairly common and those that would appear in circulation are now completely absent from circulation. Today, finding a pre 64 dime or quarter is a rarity, Franklin or Walking Liberty halves are none existent as are Standing Liberty quarters and Buffalo nickels. Barbers were before my time but those others were still around when I started collecting. Periodically someone will just go out and spend grandpa's collection and a few old coins will briefly be available. I'd imagine that they are snatched up as novelties by folks who like novelties...

None of my sons are into coin collecting so I am trying to label everything of real value so that they will get something for it at the very least. I have part of my grandfather's and father's collections, all of mine and about 500# of stuff to look through. There's nothing extremely valuable but it is all worth more than face value.

Some of it is just nostalgic. I found a quarter once when I was about 12 that had a weird sort of finish, shiny but slick... I asked my dad about it and he said it was one that someone had put Mercury on. I still have it. Takes me back to those sort of conversations that are gone forever now, except when and old man looks at a Mercury damaged coin and remembers his dad...

Oh well,

Still looking and reading and learning... I enjoy the discussions.
