I am new to collecting coins and bought a couple silver dollars (from private) in the last months. I did mainly go by gut feeling, but have studied various websites with grading advice. I am still quite unsure especially about the divisions between XF / AU and AU / MS.

So I would now like to compare my grades to what the community here thinks. I hope the pictures are good enough.

Here goes no 5, a 1921 Morgan dollar, no mintmark.

Apparently a lot of marks on the cheek that don't show well here. I'll say MS-63+.

You have a good eye. I managed to make a better picture, where the scratches/marks can be seen better.

MS-63. Not sure if that cheek scratch would be enough to detail it or not

If the scratch on the cheek would not be there, it would be still only 63?

If I look on the PCGS examples I find 63 to be somewhat less attractive than this coin here. Isn't it closer to a 64+ (again, if you ignore the mark on the cheek)?

(I am talking about this pictures here:

Ouch, that scratch really hurts this coin. The 1921 morgans are difficult to get spotless, and this coin is far from that. Considering the scratch, this coin is an MS-63 in my eyes.

MS63's have a very large range of marks and scratches. the PCGS example is only one and I would consider their example on the high end of marks and scuffs.

its possible but doubtful as a 64 should have full luster across the cheek. so in your case I think thats what would hold it back. you have to look at all the components of grade. Stike, Luster, surface preservation and eye appeal.

with the broken cheek luster your coin would fall in that MS63 range
