@ck, first welcome to CCF. Second, while this nickel has no numismatic value, it is a fun find and worth saving both pieces in a 2x2.@john is correct that you have a so-called Magician's coin.

So, the smaller portion has the remnants of the nickel obverse on one side, and a penny obverse on the other?

Clever. This is, definitively, a Magician's coin, and not a "spy coin" or a "lover's locket" or any other possible explanation for a hollowed-out coin, as only a magician would need the penny-head there. How do magicians turn a nickel into a penny, or vice-versa? Now you know.

It also clearly shows that two different 1976 nickels had to be sacrificed to make it - there are two distinctly different mintmarks, one on each piece.

Presumably this piece is now too "worn out" to fool anybody in a magic show.
