Not my coin, and not for sale (to my knowledge). What do you think this one graded?

Coins at this level are usually graded more on market value than technical grade. The color and luster plus knockout eye appeal probably landed this piece in a MS65 holder. And that grade could easily hold even if it was lightly circulated because the market would probably pay 65 money for it.

Wowza, went to check out PCGS comparison but they don't seem to have a 65 in there lol report, I'm gonna say they called it Au58, a very nice coin, thanks for sharing. These older coins are super tough to grade imo.

MS-64 at best but still a beauty.

Quote: Coins at this level are usually graded more on market value than technical grade. I agree, this is very true for this type of coin. This coin has very attractive surfaces. The strike is very good on this piece, but it is short of making my jaw drop. I don't think PCGS will put this in a 65 holder. MS-64, possibly higher. Of course, seeing this coin in hand would give an entirely different first impression.

BB-194 Dotted date variety, I think this one might be much better than the rest are thinking so far, I'm going MS66.
Going in blind as PCGS is down for maintenance and I can't even see the pop reports.

This coin, in person, stuns. I would rather have this one (As it is not an option, I will have to settle for an EF(40) common date, though) than some of the higher graded ones I saw on PCGS's site. PCGS called this one MS(62)+, and while there are some marks on the field that don't show up in TrueView, the luster, cleanliness of the surfaces, and the strength of the strike make this coin an elusive dream (for any collector, I am guessing).

I was way, way over grading these bust dollars. At least I did get the 1799/8 + correct even if my grade was off. A difficult series to grade not having the coin in hand, luster on 200+ year old coins is something that really needs to be seen in person. I'd love to own any one of these in my collection. A great challenge and tough one too Adam, thanks for posting these.

Trueview strikes again. I knocked this one 1 point to MS64. apparently I need to adjust my trueview grading structure once again.
