to the CCF First, I have requested this be moved to its own thread. It gets confusing with more than one coin on a single thread. Second, your coin is just just damaged, doesn't really matter how. It isn't an error as this could not happen during the striking of the coin.

Weight? 2.5 grams zinc 3.1 grams copper. Probably one of the large date zinc coins. They were new at that time, and there were issues with plating over zinc on these. Not a plus for the coin. It actually lowers the grade when this happens on a coin. Just face value for this one.

can you post up another picture - one that is not so close (but too far away either)?

It actually weighs 3.11 and if it was a damaged coin prior to strike why are numbers and letters not damaged?

Just post mint damage. How/why ? Doesn't really matter, as damage is damage. W

Quote: Forgive me I meant if it was a damaged coin I presume u mean after strike why are letters and numbers unscathed? I did a quick look at your photos and noted the scratch scars run right over the memorial and Lincoln's head. The head and memorial are struck at the same time as the letters and numbers. This indicates that the marks got there after striking to me.

Yet the rims and outer devices are totally unaffected? Even the mintmark appears intact. Quite curious to me. Perhaps this is a defective planchet, many of which I have seen here without degraded value and considered somewhat unusual. Let's see what the resident metalurgisit Silvosi weighs in with. Such planchet anomalies have been exhibited here previously. I briefly hesitate to throw my hat in the PMD camp without some further explanation even though I am in no means an expert in these matters. Seems to me PMD would have also affected the outer devices and rims to some extent.

to the CCF It is weird that the scratches are on the field and devices, and not the letters around the edge. We may need closer and in focus pics to see if the scratches go over the letters. At first it looked to me like lead or solder, but I can't explain why the letters weren't effected.

Looks like someone took a wire brush to it then put it back in circulation. If it circulated for another 20 years I'm sure that would have worn down most of the scratches off the high points of the designs & devices.
