This I also bought as I build up my set (I aim for every year first, then every mint, and then we will see). I paid 45€ for the coin, german-graded "vz". Whats with the hair over the ear? I can`t really imagine that this is wear, because the luster is mainly intact (if muted). Is it a really bad strike? Edited by HP2001PH 07/20/2022 12:04 pm

Not seeing original frosty luster. Possibly cleaned. Maybe MS details.

What makes you think it has been cleaned? Do you mean mechanically cleaned (wiped or polished) or chemically?

The color looks off in the pics to me . Could just have been dipped in something non abrasive but maybe in something more reactive . Just hard to tell by the pics .
The area over the ear though is mostly from being A soft strike.Same with the Eagles Breast feathers.

The New Orleans mint was known for having soft strikes on Morgan's. The soft strike shows up on the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast as these are the high points on the coin. On O mint Morgan's after 1900, there was soft strike improvement. The coin has halos around the stars. The halos could be caused from normal circulation, cleaning or a chemical dip to remove toning. The coin does not look like it has been in circulation, so the halos most likely were caused from cleaning or a dip to remove toning.

I agree, the color looks off. I am having a hard time with this one with these pics. I can't get a good read on wear vs rub vs strike vs cleaning, etc. Could you try photos with a different light source? For example, the reverse picture here is over exposed with light at the top and shadowed at the bottom.

Is it a really bad strike? the 83(O) are a mix of average strikes and soft. this one falls into the later, so yes to answer your question, it is strke related. I do not see any signs of circulation on either side. also the luster appears to be intact across the cheek which will help hold the grade but I do believe the coin has been dipped. it may not be bad to detail the coin the coin imo is MS64 and its a toss up that it grades straight but because of the remaining luster I'm leaning towards it grades straught

As suggested, I tried a different light source. (Just ambient room lighting).

I will say MS-63. I think the, what appears to be, subdued luster holds this one back from a MS-64. I also agree it was most likely dipped at some point.
