Dear coin experts,

I recently found this coin in my mum's old hat-box of coins, and I wondered if it is a fake Roman? It seems too round!

Any tips and info most welcome!

Thank you, Will Parsons.

Yes, likely fake, perhaps sand cast. It references an Imperial follis with GENIO POPVLI ROMANI reverse.

@will, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that the surface roughness seems consistent with this piece being cast. Two requests: can you please post the weight and a picture showing the edge? I'm interested to see if there is a parting line. Thx.

Late Roman Bronzes were, for the most part, nice and round - they'd perfected the art of making round flat pieces of metal to make coins out of. So it's "roundness" isn't the cause for suspicion. The generally porous surface and "mushy" details are what is leaning us towards the "cast fake" answer.
