WWI vets who were awarded this medal had to go the extra mile to receive it. It hadn't been awarded since the Revolutionary War until Gen MacArthur got it redesigned and reinstated for award in the early 1930s. It was awarded retroactively to WWI vets, but they had to actively request the medal to receive it.
