The standard advice is never to clean a coin. However this one might be an exception. Any opinions?

If you are going to bid, I would ask the seller for bigger high resolution pics. And a close-up of the date and mintmark

My quick guess is, you won't be able to do anything to that coin which will not make it obvious that it's a cleaned dig. So, I'd leave it alone unless there's something actively eating it.

Grab it if it's a good deal - I suspect it will go way above "market" for such a coin because of the "rarity," and I use quotes because they may be rare but are easily available to purchase.

I hear ya there wheezydog. Sometimes you buy coins that are a good deal and just need some love, like my newest acquisition, a lower grade no date 1916 Standing Liberty quarter. She's been around, but she's the real deal ( all diagnostics check out) and I got a great deal on it. I'm just glad to finally have a 1916, even if it's like a Fair-02

I dunno, i'd save the few bucks you might spend and save up for a nice one. Thats just me I guess. Cleaning will do nothing for this coins value imo.

If you harshly clean a coin like this, the surface will look worse...it will be pitted and you'll actually lose detail. The only thing I'd do is take it to the sink and rinse it with fingers. Then I'd rinse it with xylene and put it to rest. Anyhing more severe than that and it'll be toast IMO.

I'd pretty much be against cleaning, even this one. I am the firm believer to leave them alone.

I would soak it in Goo Gone. Atleast run it under some water to take the chunks of dirt off!!

You wont be able to get the dark color off, its from being in the ground PROBABLY since 1914..lololol
