Over the past years I have acquired a few Liberty Head quarter dollar gold coins (mostly octagonal) for fairly cheap prices from non-coin collectors. As modern replicas are extremely common, is there a (self) method or preliminary procedures to detect if they are real or replicas prior to submitting to a specialist?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Cheers,

A very quick and simple way is to post a picture of the coin here.

Normally if there is a bear on the coin then it's a fake but they are still collectible

There were so many tokens made of these little important coins of the early pioneer days of the California gold rush. I'm with GO. If you post a pic, it can be determined fairly quickly.

Based solely on the condition of that token, I'd have to say it's a replica. That's purportedly a 155 year old piece and the condition/luster look gem-proof.

I don't collect these but you've probably got a nice copy of a 1854 gold piece.

Ya, that's a token of an octagonal 50 Cent or Dollar fractional gold piece. Probably plated but I have seen these with a small amount of gold content. Quite common although make great conversation pieces.

Is that the face of Liberty? She looks more like an Inca with an open mouth.

First two general rules. If it has a bear on it it's fake. If it does not have a denomination on it in some fashion D, Dol, Dollar it's fake. Just having a 1 or 1/2 or 1/4 does NOT count as a denomination. There is no genuine piece with a bear on it and I think there is only one that doesn't have a denomination.

It is a fake. But note that the denomination may be on the reverse
Post a pic.
