Won a Newfoundland 1888 20 Cent piece, graded fine by NNC.... I wasn't sure if I wanted to bid on it but threw a bid in or 10 bucks and won it for $9.38... not too shabby... here are the sellers pics/scans...

Be extra careful when buying NNC graded coins. They are always overgraded. The coin you bought is VG at best.A decent price, but you didn't get more than what you paid for.

You have made a very blanketed statement about grades from NNC.. I have actually had NNC coins cracked from slabs, submitted to other TPGer's and them come back with higher grades, not lower... Also you are making a grade on a scanned picture... you should know better than to make a precise grade from that type of picture... I will know what it is when it arrives... for now, it is in a NNC holder, with a grade of fine, therefore I will take it for what it is for what I paid for it... With anything in life there is always an uncertainty and you could be right about it being a VG, but to make that statement based only on the scans... you know as well as I do that you can't do that with any degree of accuracy...

I was only refering to NNC graded Canadian coins,I know nothing of their grading of other coins.I have examined over 300 NNC graded Canadian coins, and bought 12,all were overgraded without exception. The ones I bought were freed from their holders. You should be able to grade VF and lower Canadian coins with at least 80% accuracy from photos and scans before you buy on ebay.

Quote: You have made a very blanketed statement about grades from NNC Well, I think it's appropriate to exercise some caution towards NNC because they are not a recognized TPG in any shape or form. It's a matter of public record that NNC exists to provide a "graded product" for one specific coin merchant, known as "Centsles" on ebay, as well as a few satellite distributors. I have seen hundreds of coins slabbed by NNC, and for those I'm familiar with recognized grading standards, I generally say NNC overgrades. Here I'm specifically talking about Canadian and Australian coins. I won't comment on coin series I don't know about, and it would also be unfair for me to grade your NFLD coin based on that photo. All said, $9 for that coin seems like a good deal.

I understand where you are coming from and DBM you are right that you can look at a scan or pic and get some idea of what you are getting... More so with a picture than a scan... scans leave out details that pictures pick up. I to am usually skeptical of NNC but this coin, with a mintage of 75,000, was something I wanted and felt that at 9 bucks I did not, in any way, overpay. Didn't mean to come across harsh on that, just was in a mood when I read it... sorry..

Looks like a beautiful coin to me. Nice snag ASUTodd. Regardless of the grade, I think it's a fine coin to own!

Quote: For what it's worth... IMO.. it's a F-12 SHAFTA9a ... and with that, if it were my coin, I'd leave it in that slab. Perhaps having decent examples of varied TPGs in a collection would be a good thing? Very nice coin at that price though. I have some decent Newfoundland silver meself, but only own a handful of TPG coins in my whole collection, no two same TPGs yet!

The only reason I want to take it out is that I have been told (have not seen this with my own eyes) that the inserts for NNC slabs cause some bad toning/ funny stuff on coins.... anyone seen or heard of this? I guess I could leave it and keep an eye on it, but you are right... if it is a good example of an F-12 then I shouldleave it to show that NNC is doing their job right.

I recently found one 1888 20c coin having the last 8 doubled. In most of the 1888's, there is no doubling in any of the digits.
