Last night I was going through some stuff to take to the Security Boxes down at the bank. I found a couple of tubes of 1982 & 1983 P & D Quarters.
I don't know why I have these, other than, once upon a time seeing that the RedBook puts such a high value on them.
I looked them up in the '09 RedBook and it says.......MS-63 $21.00....versus most other years are $1.00 in MS-63. The '83 P also has ONE OF THE HIGHEST MINTAGE NUMBERS OF THEM ALL TOO !...
So, none that I have are in espicially wonderful condition....maybe AU-50 or so. I was just going to dump them into my change jar that goes to the bank when full.....but before I do........
CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME THE REASON THAT THE RedBook PLACES SUCH A HIGH VALUE ON THESE ABOVE NO OTHER ?
Even the State Qtrs. cannot get above a dollar in value in MS-63 .....except one or two !

Keep em' or dump em' ?

I think this is due to no mint sets in 1982 and 1983 and many of the UNCS were circulated with few rolls or mint bag hoarding due to high mintage figures.
Thus, current values are a speculation that there are much fewer preserved BU singles from the usual issued mint sets, rolls and mint sewn bags to be had today compared to other more recent years.
I know the same rule applies to Jefferson nickels with the 1982 P being hard to find in GEM BU with full strike and details.
I overlooked and ignored them myself when released.

Wheezydog is right on the money. The issue of mint sets for those years where suspended in order to safe some money in the government budget. At least thats what I've been told which doesn't make much sense because doesn't the government release mint sets to MAKE money?

Anyways, so since there where no mint sets issued for those years high grade quarters of said years are a rariety. Not only quarters but all the regular issue coins carry a premium to some degree as well in high grades.

I see now.......so it would be completely pointless to save them in average circulated condition......

OFF TO THE BANK THEY GO THEN !......

Yeah, when I first started collecting I noticed the same thing about 1982 P&D nickels. I saw somewhere where their were selling at like $9.00 apiece and I thought "Wow, I should have no problem finding those and selling them to make a bunch of money". But yeah, regular circulation coins do not hold a premium.

Your best but to pull high grade coins from these years out of circulation, in my opinion, would probably be very old change hoards. Like the blue water jugs that the grandparents have been filling up for years.

That's what I love about this date. It's even hard to find a nice one in circulation.
