There are a lot of rolls of Presidential dollars available. The two most prevalent ones seem to be wrapped in "US Mint" paper and in generic looking "N.E. String and Sons" paper. What's the difference? Do the coins get wrapped at the same time but simply get a different marking on it to make one set more collectible than the other?

I see a huge premium for US Mint rolls. I've been trying to get a 2007 John Adams P US Mint roll from ebay and the winning bid is sometimes almost $2/coin! So I'm figuring there has to be something that's different.

Thanks!

That's it exactly, only difference between them is the paper they are wrapped in. The US Mint wrapped rolls do have one small advantage. They have the mintmark printed on the wrapper. There is no way to know what mintmark is in a String & Sons roll without opening it.

Is it better not to even open the String & Sons or open them and store them in 2x2s?

The String & Sons is printed in orange. I got some on the west coast that are printed in grey. I believe they are Wells Fargo but I'm at work and can't check now. But they are otherwise the same as String & Sons.

So the US Mint rolls have coins from one mint and the N.E. String & Son rolls (bank rolls) have mixed mints? That would kind of make sense to me. I read somewhere that the bank rolls were made from bagged coins that the US Mint shipped to the banks (or whoever makes the roll). The US Mint rolls skip these extra bagging and mailing to the banks steps. Could skipping these steps result in better condition coins? I bought a P and a D US Mint roll of Washington Dollars and there were some real stinkers in there but there were also some real beauties in there too. It makes me wonder how many beat up dollars are in the bank rolls?
