Despite the horrible reputation that NTC and SEGS have with over-grading coins, I do have some MS-64/65 $1 Morgans that are comparable to with similar strikes graded by PGCS. I have a few others that I would agree are over-graded and would expect a downgrade.

Most people have been advised me to crack-out the coins that are potentially not over-graded (esp the MS-65's) because PCGS will downgrade just for sake of bias.

Does this still hold true?

PCGS insists now (more than ever) that the original label in slab is discretely obscured during process preventing exposure to the original grade from the graders.

Anyone have recent experiences with crossing over what they believe are non-overgraded coins from second/third tier TPG services and getting same grade? What about crossing over and even getting an upgrade ?

I know this has been discussed many times in past, but PCGS insists on modern reform and non-bias in their crossover procedures.

I would say the SEGS coins would have a better chance since they are actually a legitimate TPG(although their rep is not the best) and their grading on classical coins is actually not too bad. I would be cautious of NTC because I have seen problem coins(subtle and not so subtle) in their slabs so you might wind up with a bodybag for your effort

Thanks! I take this to mean that there is much less risk in cracking-out a SEGS graded coin because they are legitimate and likey screened potential problem coins before they slabbed.

Perhaps with NTC there might be a non-noticeable problem so I should leave slabbed so at least I avoid risk of bodybag.

In general, is PCGS bias still a concern when it comes to numerical scoring and crossovers despite their statements about "improved services" and "obscured labeling" when grading ?

If you are cracking out the coins then PCGS are not going to know if they were graded before. If you are sending the slabs for a crossover then thats a different story..

I generally advocate cracking for resubmission in every instance except that of a coin whose authenticity might be questionable. Even then, if it isn't already in a "reputable" slab, I'd suggest cracking it. There's no way we'll ever know what lurks in the hearts of PCGS graders, despite the company's reassurances.
