Does anyone have any idea what they charge to slab in bulk?
I am always amazed, that in most cases, it is cheaper to buy a slabbed coin on ebay then it is to slab your own.

wif99,

If you just want the container and not the authentication and experienced grading, you can do an ebay search on numismatic materials and find everything you need to "do it yourself". If this is for your own use and organization purposes, have at it and good luck. If your intent is to package coins for resale with a grade on the label, then you are venturing down a path that most of us here hold in very low regard. ebay and now other venues are rife with "self-slabbers" or "basement slabbers" who prey on the uninformed coin enthusiast. They blatantly misrepresent the product (MS 67 graded coins that at best are AU ... most are cleaned). The unsuspecting and uninformed buyer pays much more for these coins than they are actually worth.

I guess I should have been more specific. I am curious about the price to slab in bulk.
I can buy a set of 4 Presidential dollars on ebay for $20-$25
While it cost me with shipping close to $80 with postage to send them same 4 coins to PCGS

wif99,

I am not familiar with volume rates offered by PCGS. I would suspect that high-volume submitters pay the normal price and make their money off the MS/PR 70's ... letting the MS/PF 69 and below go for whatever the market will bear. The price to grade moderns is $14, plus $5 per order handling fee. Let's say someone submits 25 at a time (25 x $14 = $350 + $5 handling = $355 + registered shipping each way for a roll of pres dollars $20 x 2 = $40, for a total of $395). That works out to $15.80 per coin. I've seen individual PCGS graded coins go for $20 in MS69. If submitted as a four-coin set, the price would be even lower.

I recently purchased a 1958-D Lincoln Cent on ebay for $7.25 which includes shipping. How can someone on ebay send a coin to PCGS and pay to slab it and sell to me at $7.25 and make money? Here's the coin that I purchased.

someone on another forum sent in to PCGS a 2008 silver american eagle and it only sold for I believe $20. Sending the coin in to slab it, time, etc probably cost over $20 easily. Hard to make money I believe unless you have a good eye and think the coin may get MS70 or Pf 70.

They do have cheaper rates for bulk shipments and you may or may not be able to set minimum grades (If you set a minimum normally a certain percentage MUST grade at that level or above or you pay for the grading on ALL of the coins.) I think the minimum number of coins you can send for bulk grading is 100 pieces of each date/mint combination. And the bulk grading is typically only open to their authorized dealers. (depending on the company)

The coins you typically see that cn be purchased for less than the cost of a regular slabbing are usually mistakes that shouldn't have been sent in, or the dross from bulk shipment that needs to be cleaned out of inventory, possibly even at a small loss, inorder to restore cash flow while they make their profit on the "cream" pieces that came back.

Yep exactly, some dealers send in massive quantities. When it comes to selling sub par coins, they simply have to go. They make a lot of money on the 70s and purchase enough coins to get earliest shipments - first minted coins. Hence they get the best quality coins possible in most cases.

I was told buy a dealer that bulk submits to NGC he pays around 6-8 dollars a piece to slab moderns. He also said it takes months to get them back.

I would venture to guess that the "Bank of Omaha Hoard" was a bulk submission. Does anyone know how many of those coins were actually graded and slabbed and any facts about this hoard?

Talking to a man who buys rolls of coins and slabs them with pcgs He does not get a large break on the slab coins costs only the body bag coins 60% of 100 coins have to meet the grade you request and only 4 dates are allowed to be presented. I have done the math and modern 69s are a steal at 5 -7 dollars long term of course. But this is a long term hobby...............

Apparently PCGS dropped bulk submissions last year but is now reinstating.. http://www.pcgs.com/articles/articl...zine02172009

Breakdown: 100 coin minimum @ $10/coin with no more than four different date or mint mark combinations, 60% have to meet the grade specified or the fee is higher, and if you mess up your submission you get charged $75 and your coins are sent back ungraded. Ouch!
