There seem to be a hint of letters below the thick "log" on the reverse (or observe)

Possibly this was cut down from a larger original?

What an interesting mystery. Looks like it's been shaped to fit a bezel. However, if there's no indication of filing (even ancient filing), then maybe it's just an oddly shaped flan? I would guess that's a galley on the reverse, though if that's the case, then what's on deck is difficult to determine - at least for me.
