Hi! New here and I'm sorry if this has been asked a zillion times and also if I'm posting in the wrong area. I'm looking to purchase an authentic Athens Tetradrachm, I'm not looking for one specific time period/years just more looking for the owl aesthetically and above everything want to make sure what I'm purchasing is authentic and not a repro. I found this coin quickly when searching, I appreciate any help at all and suggestions on where to buy an authentic coin. ebay feels dicey for me as a novice. Thank you so much!

If I'm not mistaken, that's a Ken Dorney listing. Ken is completely trustworthy, one of the most knowledgeable and respected sellers of ancients.

@lasy, first welcome to CCF. Second, with respect to your comment:

I agree with you, especially for ancient coins. A better online marketplace to look for an owl would be vcoins.com (for US purchasers).

Thank you so much for getting back to me! I found it on vcoins, I thought I saw on here that site was reputable, but then second guessed myself like how do I know, thank you for your reply!

Ok yep and good eye @bob for correctly discerning the seller. The only thing that I would point out on this specific coin is the test cut on the rev that is not mentioned in the description. It is not as noticeable as most and doesn't detract from the design in my opinion.

Thank you both @bob and @spence! I'm sorry I am not sure how to do proper replies on here. And @spence thank you for pointing out the test cut, I was wondering what that was on some of the coins I was looking at, this one isn't too distracting like you said and like others I've seen. I really appreciate you both getting back to me!

Not sure if the link will work, but here's the Numiswiki page dealing with test cuts:

Just remember:-
with any significant buy with ancient coins, keep a record of price paid and date, along from whom it was purchased. Provenance is important.
If you are a newbie into ancients, give ebay a miss unless that seller is a known reputable dealer. Always better to buy from a reputable dealer.

High quality fakes are out there. that would easily deceive a newbie. Athenian tetradrachms are probably the most frequently faked of all ancient coins.

Athenian tetradrachms of this period are reasonably common, but are normally in high demand. With many sales, price research is easy.
CoinArchives is a good place to start.

If you get a good example, you will be satisfied with it for the rest of your numismatic life.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tactile feel of a genuine Athenian tetradrachm makes you think that you are handling a piece of real money. (which you are). Beware: don't become like Scrooge Mc Duck !
