I recently discovered this coin in change. Errors are not my strong suite, and I was hoping anyone could help identify if it is genuine and potential value. The 2019 dime in the picture is just for reference.

If I look at your photos, seem to have two different Observe design. 2015 was not an change year for Observe design. The left coin is far from the normal design.

@1811, first welcome to CCF. Second, coins with missing clad layers are underweight but copper-toned (or plated) coins will be within mint specs. Can you please post the weight of this coin? Thx.

I don't have a scale currently, but will try to get one tomorrow. I will say that the 'hopeful' error appears thinner than other dimes from similar years (2011 is the edge in the picture for comparison, closest I could find at home right now to 2015).

Ok thx. I look forward to seeing what you measure for a weight. From the edge pic, it looks thinner but it is a little hard to know for sure since you aren't quite straight on the normal dime. This is a good coin to set aside until we have more information.

Appears plated, similar to a counterfeit copper 1943 cent.

Note the grime on near the devices. It could be just an outdoor find with a metal detector. They are more that color:

The longer they are un-noticed, the more brown color appears on the coin. The more the coin is affected. So I'm not thinking this is plated coin. But an altered color coin. Note even the red is not present from the copper layer. So it is a coating on the coin. The raised devices will show first when the coating is wearing off. If it were missing a clad/cladding it would be a weaker strike and red in color, not the color it appears to be now.

The weight should be close to normal for this coin:

This one looks like it was weakly plated. I'll wait for a good weight to firm out my response though.

Update! After going to Walmart, lowes, and runnings and coming up empty, finally got access to a digital scale. It weighs exactly 2.27 grams. So I'm assuming it's an error from annealing, especially after seeing other examples of improperly annealed dimes.

2.27 grams is the normal weight. (I think you forgot the second '2')

Thx for following up on the weight. Since it is right at mint spec, this count could have surface toning due to environmental or chemical exposure, be plated, or have something wrong with the heat treatment. If you have close ties to an university with a chemistry or biology department , you could see if they would be willing to nondestructively test the surface to determine the elements present. That would help to determine if someone just plated it.
