The administrators of ebay are not numismatic experts, nor can we expect them to be. That is one of the reasons why I don't buy numismatic items from this source.

There are both bad and good sellers on ebay. By bad I mean some sellers are deceptive with manipulated photos, exaggurated condition of a coin, fakes, etc., others don't know much about coins, you can tell by their descriptions. Some very well known reputible dealers sell on ebay. I've bought coins there. You just have to be careful, know about coins and current prices, buy from sellers that offer returns.

Or perhaps the seller is ill-informed.

Ouch! Plated, yes. As for ebay, I pick a few items up every now and then; however, I limit more significant acquisitions for coins shows and coin shops--the 'in-hand' experience.

Wow what a destroyed cent. I hate to say it but some of these people actually make money on ebay with so called coins like this. I hope they can sleep good at night.

There are lots of honest sellers out there on the 'Bay. The problem is identifying them with a high degree of reliability.
With more expensive items, definitely more secure if already know the seller with an established and proven reputation. Professional coin dealers can usually achieve this, Some of these guys have closed their LCS, and now deal on-line only. Ok if you have spoken personally to them at some time in the past before they closed their LCS, and now often turn up at coin shows.
There are also honest coin collectors out there, that may now wish to sell some or all of their collection. Unfortunately for these guys, their reputation is harder for them to establish
The bar that I set for myself is too high for most sellers unknown to me to jump over. In most cases, that is a pity for those sellers that happen to be honest. It is a pity for myself as well, because of the bargains that may be missed.
