Should-NGC-Be-Slabbing-This? Should-NGC-Be-Slabbing-This?

I've seen some questionable things being slabbed but this is too much. Does anyone know the cutoff for the size of gouges, scrs before they're officially 'damage.' This item is in a current auction at Heritage. That mess on the cheek loooks like it could be a heiroglyphic sign or something.

They look like bagmarks so I do not have a problem with it being in a slab. However, bagmarks that large in a prime focal area should at least knock this coin down to AU50 as I just cannot see this as a choice AU coin, Numismedia lists an ~$80 difference between 55 and 50.

I believe those are "Ejector Marks" from the mint's press. I've got a couple myself and the President of the BHNC says they were simply an unfortunate (yet interesting) aspect of the early 19th Century coining process. Eh, 50-53-55 seems about right.

Thanks for the info and yikes to it, too. I guess if it's a mint-related event it's considered ok. I'm just glad I don't need to buy sight-unseen anymore(since the internet).

Ejector marks? I think that is is an euphemistic excuse for why you should ignore the damage.

Perhaps, but that's what it's called within the Bust Half Nut Club and the club is supposed to be the standard within the hobby. There are some coin-smart individuals who are members, myself EXcluded, LOL.... These particular marks are considered a premium to some also and command a higher purchase/sale price.

I mean the upper marks which look kinda like the denticles standing upright that is. The ones beneath this appear to be bag marks, thus the AU-55 grade. The coin has luster and warrants the grade IMHO.

Take Care
Ben
