Image: 1798_r_s2.jpg71.17 KB Hi, I have a 1798 $1 Bust coin that I am hoping can be graded by one of top 3 TPG;s(PCGS, NGC, ANACS) as "problem free" despite the shallow scratch on reverse that stretches from "S" in "STATES" to the "F" in "OF". Scratch is just shallow enough to only be noticeable when coin is tilted at angle. People tell me this is borderline problem coin because of (long)length of the scratch but on the other hand its rather swallow and in a non-key area. So 50/50 chance? Any recommendations as to which TPG service would be most likely (if any) to qualify this coin as "problem free" and grade? Worst case scenario I would submit to NCS to slab with SCRATCHED attribute on label along side the numerical grade. (At least a minor scratch is more appealing than a cleaned coin) Suggestions? Experiences? Edited by skylerdmpl 02/17/2009 5:45 pm

You're right - this one is borderline - I don't think your "chances" are much different between the three major TPG's, all of which now slab "problem" coins. ANACS and NCS/NGC will suggest an appropriate grade for the coin if it's a problem slab, while PCGS will not. The grading process is far too subjective to make generalizations about how they'd behave in a given situation. How would you be submitting? Are there dealers in Europe which will piggyback your submission, or would you be purchasing a direct-submission membership?

Thanks for reply. I think I will submit this one (together with about 30 PL/DMPL Morgans - mostly crossovers) to PCGS (as direct submission) and hope for best.
I will update on outcome for those interested...(?) I will deal with results and take actions to re-submit to other TPGs if need be.
Cheers, C.J.

Hello Skyler, and welcome! I think a certain amount of minor damage is acceptable in lower-grade coins. Your coin looks to be in the VG grade range and as such it would be expected to show the effects of circulation. This scratch might make the difference between, say, a VG-10 and a VG-8 grade, but I expect it would slab at PCGS. Do you know if your coin is a scarce die variety? There are many known varieties of the 1798 dollar and if this is a rare one it would be worth paying extra for PCGS to attribute it on the label. Good luck with your submission, and by all means let us know how it turns out. I'd also like to see the obverse of this dollar, plus photos of any other coins you are planning to submit. We love pictures!

Quote: I think a certain amount of minor damage is acceptable in lower-grade coins That's correct. I believe this coin also falls in the VG category. The scratch, although not too significant, probably will make it eligible for the PCGS "Genuine" service. I believe if the coin was in the G or AG levels, you'd have a better shot at it coming back "problem free". Just my opinion.

Thanks for advice! And here is the OBV pic, btw. I am aware that rare varieties exist but have not (yet) researched this and no clue if any apply to this coin. My years experience in collecting have been primary with Morgan dollars and only recently have I expanded into Early dollars. I hope to avoid the PCGS "Genuine" label. At least NCS would indicated "scratched" as opposed to "cleaned" which seems to make a difference. (I assume this coin has not been cleaned - fingers crossed) Anyhow, will submit to PCGS and report results in March! Image: 1798_obv2.jpg73.17 KB

Indeed. It was actually sold to me as a raw VF OBV / VG REV. Will be interesting to see what PCGS grades it.

Variety is 1798 B-7 BB-95 R-4 so it is a little scarcer variety.

Thanks for tip!
Is there a online reference for Bust varieties similar to VAMworld for Morgans? I searched a bit , but couldn't find one.
