I have 50 pieces of 1 0z. silver bars, w/ 24 karat gold plating. 50 pieces of silver weigh 1,555 grams. My total weight of silver w/ 24 karat gold plating is 1,609 grams. Am I to assume that I have 54 grams in gold weight?
Going with that assumption, you would have about 1 gram of gold per ounce of silver- the gold would be worth more than the silver itself. Plating is normally a very thin layer, not 3% of the total weight. Do the bars have a hallmark? If they do not, I think it would be a safer assumption to say that these bars are not .999 silver.
Here are some pictures. On the back it says; one troy oz. .999 fine silver & engraved on the edge it says; HM 24KT EGP 0358 (Hamilton mint 24kt electric gold plate and serial #)
