Dr. Peper, for the War of 1812 the first coin I ever bought myself is a damaged Classic Head Cent, which I got for 15 bucks when I was 9 years old. Eventually I will try to get another, nicer 1812 coin, but not for a while. For the War of 1812 I recently (two years ago) got an 1814 dime in AU, though, as 1814 is when the British burned the White House down. I also sought the 1838-O dime specifically because it was minted in New Orleans (on the trail) during the Trail of Tears (maybe one of the darkest moments in US history, which makes it even more significant to learn about properly and talk about honestly). Maybe it is the same reason I like my 1861-O Half Dollar--it was probably sitting in a bag in the New Orleans mint when the Confederacy took it over. It could have seen the action. Your 1837 half dollar was also significant, though--Jackson ordered the Trail of Tears, Elijha Lovejoy was murdered for supporting abolition so vocally, and there was a major economic recession. There was also the horrible lynching of Francis McIntosh in St. Louis...

O yeah, you can defiantly find history in any year. But I was putting together a set of coins from every offical war the US fought in.
American Revolution, 1812, Mexican-American, Civil War, Spanish American, WW1, WW2. Though I dont think technically the Civil War counts as an offical war, I still enjoy reading the history behind it. A 1861-O coin would be cool to have though for the reason you listed.
Also, as I said, the price for the coin was right, free. cant beat that price

I had another question about this coin. It has what I am pretty sure is a die rotation, I know that a lot of older coins had issues with correct alignment, and isn't super rare, just wondering if it adds any value. Assuming no, but just curious. Pictures to show how much rotation. I am not exactly sure if I correctly lined it up, so I took a picture of each side, getting the opposite side as close as straight as I could before flipping it over.

Rotated dies don't add a premium on bust halves.
Suffering from bust half fever.

I was just unaware there was a difference, in terms of grade, between intentional or not. I guess I am confused cause looking at PCGS non grades they have 95-scratched and 98-damage, and when watching the video they put out about no grades both categories mention intentional marks

since a scratch is not intentional I would think from a collector standpoint it would be more preferential over an intentionally damaged coin. in a lot of cases TPG's will assign a grade to a details coin not sure if they do that on a damaged coin as well.

fair enough. Obviously I personally dont care, but I can see how many would disagree. Just means I can get nice coins that I dont mind with some cratches for cheaper
