Hi again yall. Got another coin I wanted to try and grade to improve my skill. This time it has a scratch on it, some put 1876 right by the nose. Not sure how that effects the grade. It isn't super noticeable, but obviously still there.

EF(45) details, scratched? I love this historically significant date!

Well, I too was thinking EF-40/45 thereabouts on this nice looking coin; that scratch probably will not detail it.

Good to see another fellow 20 questions gamer!

I'll go with EF-45 details (graffiti). I still like the original look of the coin.

So just to make sure I understand, and obviously very subjective, but you could make an arguement that since its an old faint scratch (besides the 1, its really hard to see) it might not effect it getting a grade? Going off of this

XF details, graffiti. That date scratched on the left obverse field definitely affects grade and value.

I enjoyed the video about it that one reason older coins had scratches is that people were bored and had nothing better to do.

There is a big difference between an old, unintentional scratch and graffiti, which is considered damage. Graffiti is usually much worse.

This piece has great luster, decent strike for 1812. That grafitti in the left obverse field will detail this coin. It is deliberate and noticable. AU-50 Details Grafitti

Exactly why I have it. I have a coin from every official war the US fought in. I had a slighly better, ie not scratched, one but it was like 1837. So I sold that one and kept this one. Maybe in the future will try and get an unscratched one, but not in a hurry. 1876 scratch adds a bit more history to it to

I don't see this as a wise or logical choice, but it's up to you.

I was more concerned about the date, vs the quality of the coin. the scratch really isn't super noticeable, and I didnt need to pay for the coin. So, no harm really keeping it.

DrPeper23 - are you aware that what you are calling a scratch is actually a date scratched into the coin? looks like its 1876

yes I was aware. I was just unaware there was a difference, in terms of grade, between intentional or not. I guess I am confused cause looking at PCGS non grades they have 95-scratched and 98-damage, and when watching the video they put out about no grades both catagories mention intentional marks. What matters is the intensity of the scratches, as far as I could tell.

EF-45...the engraved/scratched in date will effect the desirability. If you like it...keep it...100 year celebration of the Declaration of Independence.
