1899? Indian Head Penny Mint Error?

I found this penny in an old trunk of my grandmother's. I believe it is a mint error because another penny fits in the mark almost perfectly.

That is your best indicator of the contrary. It is PMD or post mint damage caused by another coin (and likely a vise)

It looks like an intentional mark from what's often called a 'Vise Job.' The line isn't from another small cent. If it was it would be more of a 'U' shape cut into the obverse of your coin. It looks more like the curved radius of a quarter of maybe even a half dollar if it was even another coin that was used to create the indention.

It just Post Mint Damage or PMD and has destroyed any collectable value the coin once had.

It hurts a little to see a classic coin that's been tortured like this.

to CCF. I agree it is PMD caused by putting two coins in a bench vise.
