That '58 is probably the best one in my collection.

But my '58 UK shilling is not so flash.

One of my better 1958 coins is this Vatican city 100 Lire


Vatican coins along with Sam Marinesse coins used the same metals, sizes and currency as Italian coins.


Italy 500 Lire, 72% silver first issued this year and up to 1971 in sets and 1966 in circulation. It was replaced by a bimetallic muck metal coin in 1982.


The date was in raised relief on the edge!

Ghana went crazy with new coins in 1958, you have seen a couple already, here is a penny


Like many coins that got used in Africa, its pretty worn. Also significantly smaller than British and other colonial pennies.

I only wish we had a few more exhibitors, but its early days, we will get people like Tdizema and others once we hit the 1800s?

One of my favourite coins and designs is the 1958 British Columbia centenary dollar.


The rumour was it was the death dollar, as the top of the totem pole (I think its a Pacific Northwest nation like Haida, Tlingit, Squamish or Bella Coola - Canadians?) as it showed a raven a harbinger of death.

But it was reassured that the animal at top was a Beaver a depiction of power and prosperity not death. Animal spirits were a big part of these poles. The story gained creedence as in 1958 the treatment, respect and understanding of Aboriginal Canadian cultures was not that great. However it would be unlikely they would blatantly issue such an offensive coin. The design was good and innovative and likely prepared with some due respect. I like it.
Even though I have only had this coin for a few weeks, I previously owned a huge collection of Canadian dollars (1998 - 2001 and it was 35 onwards), I have always loved this design.


Switzerland 2 Francs, like their modern 2 Francs but before 1968 these were struck in .833 silver (5/6). This is a good one I paid melt for. The design dates back to the 1870s.


Triggersmob, here's my munted 1958 coin for you, this Spanish 50 Pesetas has obvuiously been squeezed at some stage (1957 with 58 in the stars). This coin first came out in 1957 and its size and shape remained intact until 1989!
